welcome to just answer , I have seen this fault before on a E220 cdi , exactly the same symtoms , the fan would run and the esp warning was on but no crank signal , this was the engine control unit , but it maybe worth taking a look in the module box under the bonnet , remove the cover and you will see various control units and a small fuse box , this is the K40 relay block , when you get the Mercedes-Benz SLK (R171) – fuse box diagram – location. F32 – Front prefuse. F34 – Interior fuse box. N10/1 – Driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module. N10/2 – Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module.
Early SLKs suffered from soldered joint failures on the K40 pcb. This mainly affects smooth op and fuel pump. I have just repaired mine. K40 Relay - Right hand drive. LHD opposite. Remove neg batt term. Remove computer lid. Unclip holding tang and lift up module. Pull off connectors.
3. remove jack and holder (pullup at rear) 4. pull out foam box from bottom and remove by folding top back. 5. unclip vac pipes (I marked to ident. This is important) 6. unclip 2 wiring loom plugs. 7. using a small flat screwdriver to push detents remove base by lifting it as you go around.
